Using Wood Well

About the Material Lifespan Calculator

This calculator is designed to provide a simple way to explore the lifespan of building materials and their renewal times. The goal is to help architects, builders, and designers make more informed decisions about the materials they use.

How it Works

The calculator uses two data sources:

  • Elements Data (1-Element1.csv): This file contains a list of building elements, categorized using the SfB classification system. For each element, it provides a typical lifespan in years, as well as the potential lifespan of various materials when used in that element.
  • Materials Data (2-Materials2.csv): This file contains a list of materials, with a focus on wood species. It provides the typical time it takes for that material to be renewed (i.e., for a tree to grow to a harvestable size).

The calculation itself is a simple ratio:

Use/Renewal Ratio = Lifespan of Material in Element / Renewal Time of Material

A higher ratio means that the material will last much longer than it takes to renew, which is generally a good indicator of sustainability.
