Project Overview
The Using Wood Well (UWW) initiative investigates how timber is used in construction, with the aim of improving material efficiency and supporting circular economy principles. The project analyses building data at multiple scales:
Level 1 (General) examines Wood Usage Intensity (WUI) across 107 timber building projects worldwide, comparing sectors, structural types, and building sizes. Level 2 (Frame) provides granular analysis of frame-level material composition for 9 detailed projects, measuring Use Renewal Rate (URR) and bio-based content. Additional tools support IFC model viewing and material lifespan analysis.
Level 1 — General Building Analysis
L1 Data Explorer
Interactive scatter plot and box plot for exploring WUI across 107 timber building projects. Filter by sector, storeys, and area range.
Level 1L1 Insights Dashboard
Six-tab storytelling dashboard with KPI cards, category comparisons, distribution analysis, heatmaps, and a comparison tool.
Level 1Level 2 — Frame Material Composition
L2 URR Explorer
Scatter plot and box plot for frame-level analysis of 9 projects. Explore URR, BIO volume, and WUI at frame and floor level.
Level 2L2 Insights Dashboard
Six-tab dashboard for URR insights, including URR range charts coloured by BIO volume and mass percentages, country comparisons, and heatmaps.
Level 2Level 3 — Publication Charts
L3 B&W Chart Library
Black and white publication charts for Level 3 analysis. Includes volume lifecycle, donut breakdowns, and cross-project volume comparisons.
Level 3Material Data Charts
Charts exploring material productivity, harvest age relationships, and market share distributions across construction material types.
